Vanished Places

Half the children in East Hampton attended school at the "Eelpot," so called for its long, narrow shape, in the 19th century. One continuous bench-and-desk ran around three sides of the room; students sat with their backs to the teacher. The Eelpot stood on the site of the present Methodist Church.
