East Hampton Town 350th Anniversary Celebration
|
BUNGALOW BY THE BAY At the turn of the century, all the land on Gardiner's Bay from the fish factory at Promised Land west to Fresh Pond in Amagansett was owned by my great-grandfather, Capt. Joshua B. Edwards. A retired round-Cape-Horn whaleman who led whaling expeditions off Amagansett beach for nearly 50 years, he was also captain of menhaden fishing steamers out of Promised Land, as were his sons, Everett, Samuel, and Herbert, my grandfather.
THE TASTE OF HISTORY The Ladies Village Improvement Society's 60th Anniversary Cookbook, like others of its era, ventured beyond the kitchen into the larger arena of homemaking in general. Members of the society must have had fun collecting tips for the section called "Household Hints From Old East Hampton: Some to be Taken Seriously - Some Not."
What's In A Name? BUFFALO WALLER
Historic Hikes A summerlong Saturday-morning series of free historic hikes is the East Hampton Trails Preservation Society's appropriate contribution to the town's 350th anniversary celebration. The hikes began on the Fourth of July and will run through Sept. 12.
THE RAMBLERS: THE WORLD IS THEIR OYSTER A half-century ago, the group grew to 40 members, where it remains today, new Ramblers admitted only on the death of former ones.
