East Hampton Town
350th Anniversary Celebration

CAPTAIN KIDD VISITS GARDINER'S ISLAND
On June 25, 1699, in the presence of John Gardiner, Capt. William Kidd buried a treasure, including gold and jewels, on Gardiner's Island. Captain Kidd reportedly said to Gardiner, "If I call for it and it is gone, I will have your head or your son's." David Gardiner was just 8 years old.

THE TASTE OF HISTORY
In a section of their 60th anniversary cookbook called "For Men Only," the editor-cooks of the Ladies Village Improvement Society published a subsection, "Favorite Foods of Our Officials" (among whom President Dwight Eisenhower and New York State Governor Averell Harriman are represented).

Seek Veterans
The East Hampton American Legion is doing its bit to mark the town's 350th anniversary celebration this year by compiling a roster of residents who lost their lives in wartime.

EDWARDSES
Two branches of the East Hampton Edwards family tree were inadvertently mangled on this page in recent weeks.

ANNIVERSARY SINGERS
The East Hampton Vocal Camerata, a group of 21 East Hampton High School students led by David Douglas, has been lending an authentic sound this spring to some of the events marking East Hampton Town's 350th anniversary.

Wolves In The Night
Regulating livestock and protecting the animals from predators was a major concern of East Hampton town meetings in colonial days.
