East Hampton Town
350th Anniversary Celebration

WILLARD'S TAVERN
In the '50s the vacationing public only expected a clean, inexpensive room, a towel, a bar of soap, and indoor plumbing. And that is what we gave them.

What's In A Name?
PROMISED LAND

TALES OF THE MONTAUK LIGHT
When my great-grandmother Emily Scott Strong was growing up in the Montauk Lighthouse, the landscape was quite different than it is now. There were few trees to obscure the view and you could see for miles when you stood on the lighthouse steps and looked west. It was a lonely life, though, with only a few Montaukett Indians for company, especially when the fishing season was over and the cattle had been driven back to town.

THE FIRST HALF CENTURY
Two 350th anniversary lectures on Saturday at Guild Hall will explore 17th-century East Hampton. At 10 a.m., Christopher Collier will give the first, "East Hampton: A Strategic Outpost of Connecticut in the 1660s," which focuses on Connecticut's Long Island settlements.

EAST HAMPTON'S JEWISH COMMUNITY
When Ephraim Lewis was asked earlier this year by Betty Marmon, the president of the Jewish Center of the Hamptons, to take on a history of the Jews in East Hampton, he responded with alacrity. He is clearly enjoying the task.

HISTORICAL CALENDAR

EAST END STORIES
The spring edition of the Long Island Historical Journal, a publication of the State University at Stony Brook's history department, features two East End stories, both of particular interest in this, the 350th anniversary year of East Hampton's founding.

THE TASTE OF HISTORY
In addition to a selection of new recipes, and reprints from previous editions, the East Hampton Ladies Village Improvement Society's 60th Anniversary Cookbook has a wealth of narrative.
