THE TASTE OF HISTORY

A hard toast, zwieback was popular among mothers of war babies as a means of soothing their teething toddlers. But it also was popular as the basis for pie crust, as the Ladies Village Improvement Society cooks suggested in their 1939 cookbook.

ZWIEBACK PIE CRUST

12 zwieback
1/4 cup butter
2 Tbsps. sugar

Roll the zwieback fine with a rolling pin and mix with softened butter and the sugar. Line a buttered pie plate with the mixture, and bake in a moderate oven, 375 degrees, for 15 minutes.

Any chiffon or cream filling may be used.
