THE TASTE OF HISTORY East Hampton mothers probably satisfied a lot of after-school cravings for milk and cookies with this recipe from the Ladies Village Improvement Society's 1939 cookbook:
OLD EAST HAMPTON COOKIES
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup butter
1 cup very thick sour cream
1 tsp. soda
2 Tbsps. nutmeg
2 eggsCream sugar and butter. Stir the soda in the cream and beat mixture together well. Add a pinch of salt, the nutmeg, and the eggs. Roll soft and bake in hot oven. Raisins may be put on top if desired.
This recipe is one used in the early days in the village and has been handed down for several generations in Norman Barns's family. It came from his grandfather Madison Huntting's family.
Mrs. Norman W. Barns
