East Hampton Town 350th Anniversary Celebration
|
THE COMPOUND Coming off Montauk, Great Grandfather Strong would simply point the horses in the right direction (only one good road in those days - the beach) and climb in the back to sleep. The horses would make the lng trip back on their own, neatly turning north at Hook Pond and proceeding right into the barn when they reached home.
PICKING UP THE PACE OF THE 350TH CELEBRATION Spring bulbs are coming up, and so is the pace of 350th anniversary events. Although the biggest one of all, the Oct. 10 historical parade through East Hampton Village, is almost half a year away, it is well along in the planning. To date, reports the parade chairman, Jim Brooks, no fewer than 64 organizations have signed on to enter floats or march.
A TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY SCHOOLGIRL Sometimes on our way home from school, John and I stopped at the Parsons Blacksmith Shop. We liked to take turns cranking the handle of the bellows and forcing air through the coals. . . .

THE TASTE OF HISTORY The "health foods" idea is not a new one. Consider, for instance, this from the East Hampton Ladies Village Improvement Society's 1939 cookbook.
