Highway Diner opened with a bang last fall. The space is large, open, and bright, with a powder-coated steel fountain counter to one side — for milkshakes, floats, and banana splits — and an oak bar at another end of the room — for cocktails, wine, and craft beer. Booths with wooden benches line one wall and tables are nicely spaced. Sandwiches have tasty touches like warm turkey with crisp bacon. There are big fresh salads, a large Reuben, and an oyster po’ boy, too. The kitchen prepares almost everything in-house. Main courses include prime steak, meatloaf, local fish, and crawfish etoufee.
