Daniel English, a resident of Buell Lane Extension in East Hampton for over 50 years, died on March 6 in Southampton after a short illness. He was 79.
Mr. English served for 20 years in the United States Air Force, and then worked for 25 years as a corrections officer at the Suffolk County Corrections Facility in Riverhead.
He was born in Westfield, Pa., on Nov. 6, 1932, to Philip English and the former Lucinda Watts. Mr. English and his wife, the former Fay Fithian, raised their three children in East Hampton.
In his retirement, Mr. English liked to take it easy, according to a daughter-in-law, Delia English. “He liked to read the newspapers,” she said. “He loved watching basketball on TV,” along with weekly rides to Riverhead with Mrs. English to do a little shopping and visit a restaurant. He also enjoyed spending time with his six grandchildren and four nephews.
In addition to his grandchildren, Mr. English is survived by his wife and three children, Michael English and Mark English, both of East Hampton, and Jo Anne Miller of Washington, N.C.
A sister, Sharon Abbott of Corning, N.Y., and a brother, Stanley English of Kansas, also survive.
Visiting hours for Mr. English were held on Friday at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton, followed by a private burial.
The family has suggested memorial donations to either the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, P.O. Box 901, Wainscott 11975 or the East Hampton Village Ambulance, 1 Cedar Street, East Hampton 11937.
